Ross Stores Reports December Sales

    NEWARK, Calif., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Ross Stores, Inc. (Nasdaq: ROST)
today reported sales of $325 million for the five weeks ended January 1, 2000,
an 8% increase above the $301 million in sales for the five weeks ended
January 2, 1999.  Comparable store sales for the same period were even with
the prior year.
    For the eleven months through January 1, 2000 sales totaled
$2.332 billion, a 13% increase above the $2.062 billion in sales for the prior
year's comparable period ended January 2, 1999.  For the eleven months,
comparable store sales rose 6% from the prior year.
    Ross Stores, Inc. operates a national chain of off-price retail stores
offering first quality, in-season, branded apparel and apparel-related
merchandise for the entire family at prices that average 20% to 60% less than
department and specialty stores, as well as merchandise for the home at
similar savings.  The company had 378 stores at January 1, 2000, compared to
351 stores at the end of the same period last year.
